Statement of Purpose: The mission of SACT is to maintain a forum for the communication and coordination among prevention, intervention and treatment substance abuse providers in the city of Woonsocket. This workshop focused on the acquisitions and application of motivational enhancement strategies in substance use intervention. Videotape and role-plays demonstrated motivational interviewing (MI). Audience members had the opportunity to participate in group exercises designed to build the skills necessary to help clients identify, examine, and change maladaptive patterns of substance use. The workshop covered how to discuss the problem in an open-ended way, identify the individual's interest in changing, provide personalized feedback about risks related to the behavior, and establish strategies for implementing change if the individual desires. In research, MI has been shown to be effective in reducing alcohol abuse and smoking in adults, and more recently with adolescents. Presenter: Nancy P. Barnett, Ph.D Objectives:
Abstract: This training presented an update on information about HIV regarding the epidemiology, risks, transmission, harm reduction, confidentiality issues, counseling and testing, and referral process. The challenge of HIV/Hepatitis C prevention for the provider and educator was addressed. While HIV was the main theme of the presentation, Hepatitis C was reviewed to enlighten the audience on the seriousness of this life-long infection. Presenters: Carol A.
