Motivational Interviewing

May 18, 1999

Abstract: Changing a particular behavior involves not only the ability to change, but more importantly, the motivation to change. This workshop focused on the acquisitions and application of motivational enhancement strategies in substance use intervention. Videotape and role-plays demonstrated motivational interviewing (MI). Audience members had the opportunity to participate in group exercises designed to build the skills necessary to help clients identify, examine, and change maladaptive patterns of substance use. The workshop covered how to discuss the problem in an open-ended way, identify the individual's interest in changing, provide personalized feedback about risks related to the behavior, and establish strategies for implementing change if the individual desires. In research, MI has been shown to be effective in reducing alcohol abuse and smoking in adults, and more recently with adolescents.

Presenter: Nancy P. Barnett, Ph.D

Objectives:

  • Learn the stages of change model and understand its use in the context of MI
  • Learn the general treatment principles and basic strategies of MI
  • Develop an understanding of how to facilitate open discussion and the other consideration of change on others, including how to provide resistance
  • Learn how to provide personalized feedback
  • Practice MI basic strategies
